How to Be a Builder on the Cutting Edge

It is not easy for anyone to stay on the cutting edge of their business. Builders are no different. Staying up on the newest advancements in their field can make or break those trying to prosper. In today's new world of technology, Developers who are "Building Green" are becoming the firms in highest demand.

Let's start with some simple ways you can Build Green, improve the quality and durability of what your build, and use the newest technique basics for any builder.

OVE is a specifically stack framing method that can help builders get started from the ground up so to speak. OVE stands for Optimum Value Engineering and are framing methods that use less lumber by placing framing members only where they are needed. This approach not only cuts down the use of natural resources, but the cost to the end user, the buyer. Then think of the energy-efficiency of reducing the number of cold pockets within the walls of the home or building. Related savings in correlation to that is the extra space (and money) left for more insulation too. There are several techniques in the OVE method, and specific information to your own community.
 
Use Recycled Wood/Plastic Composite Lumber instead of cutting more trees. Recycled plastic resin is combined with wood or other plant fibers which may be post-industrial recycled content or virgin fiber. This creates a product that has various advantages over both solid wood and solid plastic. Like plastic lumber, it will not rot, crack, or splinter, while the wood fiber adds considerable strength.

Build with High Efficiency Air Conditioners without HCFC. Typical air conditioning systems use a HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerant, a substance known to cause of depletion of the ozone layer. The EPA currently limits the amount of HCFC that may be produced, and intends to prohibit use of HCFCs by 2030.

Low- or No-VOC Paints, Finishes and Adhesives alternatives are manufacture with minimal to no VOC pollutants, and are virtually odor and toxin free. This is reducing health risks and overall air quality concerns.

Insulated Vinyl Siding increases the siding's R-value by as much as five times that of conventional backings, which manufacturers claim helps reduce homeowners' energy bills. Like standard vinyl, insulated products don't require painting or staining and are low maintenance.

Recycled Content Carpet is made from recycled carpet and plastic, usually post-consumer PET from used plastic soda bottles. These Carpets perform the same as carpets created in the standard way, with the added benefits of increased stain resistance and improved indoor air quality as a result of less toxic off-gassing of volatile organic compounds.
